WIKA’s instruments and measurement solutions are found in all areas of the municipal water system, from the collection and pretreatment stage to the final water storage and distribution. Our industrial pressure gauges, temperature sensors, level transmitters, flow switches, and calibration tools keep water and wastewater treatment plants operating smoothly and efficiently.
Along with clean air, water is our planet’s most valuable resource. That’s why water treatment facilities play such an important role in countless municipalities today. Without the water and wastewater industry, the billions of people on Earth, especially those who live in urban centers, would not have reliable and convenient access to clean water for drinking, cooking, and bathing. As the population increases, the need is greater than ever to capture and treat gray water and sewage so that not a drop is wasted.
For municipal treatment plants to function safely and efficiently, they require industrial measuring instruments to monitor liquid levels, filtration systems, pumping and booster stations, and more. In addition, these instruments must be able to withstand the extreme conditions found in wastewater facilities, such as:
Industrial pressure instruments help ensure that equipment and processes are working properly. Pressure gauges, pressure sensors and transmitters, and pressure switches monitor conditions at the pump suction head, around blowers and injections systems, in sewage and slurry lines, and inside digester towers. For applications where parts can get clogged, diaphragm seals are excellent pressure accessories for isolating the media from the instrument, thereby protecting it from damage.
Differential pressure (DP) transducers help water treatment plants monitor whether air filters, aeration discs, and reverse osmosis membranes need to be cleared. When used with flow instruments like Venturi tubes, DP transmitters monitor subtle changes in pressure so that small issues do not become larger, more expensive ones.
A typical water treatment facility has dozens of basins (for storm water overflow, rain, and aeration), settling ponds, sump pits, runoff channels, screening stations, clarifiers, storage tanks, digester towers, and more. Liquid level monitoring helps prevent overflow, a messy problem as well as a safety hazard. However, standard level instruments have difficulties measuring viscous, particle-rich, foamy, and two-phase media.
Submersible pressure transmitters solve the challenges of level measurement in liquid waste. By measuring the hydrostatic pressure and then accurately calculating the level, the presence of grease, slurry, solids, and gases do not affect the output signal. WIKA also offers temperature-compensated pressure sensors for use at high or low temperature ranges. For applications with foam or other surface disturbances, a good option is to couple the industrial sensor with WIKA’s anti-clogging LevelGuard attachment.
The pumps, turbines, fans, mixers, and other machinery in a wastewater plant run practically nonstop. To monitor equipment so that they don’t overheat, use resistance thermometers (RTDs). These are highly accurate sensors that can withstand the challenges of high-vibration applications.
Aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in digesters work optimally within certain temperature ranges. Bimetallic dial thermometers and Industrial thermocouple assemblies help ensure that their environment is neither too hot nor too cold.
In a water treatment plant, liquids are constantly moving from one pipe, tank, or basin to another. Water treatment plants should monitor flow rates during such transfers as an early warning system for obstructions and other problems. Primary flow elements like Venturi tubes accurately measure flow rates with minimal pressure loss, helping to ensure safety and efficiency.
