Electrolysis

The green hydrogen value chain commonly starts with water electrolysis, a process where water molecules are being split into hydrogen and oxygen. The process is fueled by renewable energy sourced from e.g. solar-, wind- or hydro power.

The most common types of electrolysers used today are:

  • Alkaline electrolysers utilizing a potassium hydroxide solution as the electrolyte
  • Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers where a polymer electrolyte membrane represents the electrolyte
  • Solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) electrolysers, a technology where water vapor is split electrochemically into hydrogen and water at temperatures reaching up to 850°C

Each electrolyser concept poses its unique set of operational challenges in terms of process-pressure, -temperature and -media. WIKA's broad range of pressure, temperature, flow and level sensing solutions addresses these and thus ensuring efficient and safe electrolyzer operation.
