T38 temperature transmitter – Discover the remarkable
Flexible. Safe. High performance
Challenging environments require reliable temperature transmitters. In hazardous areas or in critical applications that don’t allow any leeway, the processes must be as safe as possible. Because all downtime must be avoided and efficient plant operation must be guaranteed. To meet these challenges, we have developed the new, and state-of-the-art, T38 temperature transmitter.
Challenges
A perfect temperature transmitter, in practice, must meet numerous requirements:
- ensure constant temperatures for critical processes
- ensure safe and reliable operation
- cover different integration situations and system requirements
- enable intelligent monitoring and predictive maintenance
- keep installation and maintenance costs to a minimum
The good news: The T38 makes it possible.
Designed for peace of mind
Reliability is everything when it comes to process monitoring. The T38 is at home, even in challenging industries and critical applications.
Benefits
Solutions
More integration options, less effort
Thanks to six sensor connection terminals, you have the maximum combination of input sensors that can be connected with just one transmitter. The connection is made in seconds thanks to the easily accessible terminals.
Parameterisation couldn’t be simpler
The WIKAsoft-TT software, in combination with the intuitive PU-548 programming unit, makes configuration easier. Numerous predefined functions and a standard configuration tailored to the application accelerate the process and thus ensure maximum convenience during parameterisation.
Highly flexible for every application
The T38 is available as a version for compact integration on a DIN rail and as a head-mounted version. Different case variants and a clip-on display offer a modular concept for different applications.
Optimised monitoring for critical processes
WIKA’s new True Drift Detection enables optimised process monitoring. Erroneous and drifting sensor signals are detected before they endanger process safety. In this way, operators can easily ensure continuous reliability.
Safe – always and everywhere
With its approvals, the T38 can be used in hazardous areas. In addition, the instrument was developed in accordance with IEC 61508 and meets the requirements of SIL 2, and even SIL 3 when used as a redundant system. As a whole, the system ensures maximum safety and minimises the risk of failure.
T38 with True Drift Detection: For maximum process safety
Temperature sensors are subject to drift during operation. An error that is often only noticed at the next calibration. This may have already resulted in inaccurate measured values, thus posing a risk to the process.
This risk can be significantly reduced with the T38 temperature transmitter from WIKA. The integrated True Drift Detection (TDD), in combination with a specific WIKA thermometer, continuously monitors the complete measuring range for critical deviation in the range from -50 °C to +500 °C. This intelligent self-monitoring makes the sensor particularly reliable and ideal for use in digitalised process environments.
How can True Drift Detection help to implement demand-driven interventions instead of fixed recurring checks?
Resistance thermometers are proven components for monitoring process temperatures. However, under high temperatures, strong fluctuations or moisture, a drift can occur, potentially affecting process safety.
The T38 temperature transmitter from WIKA detects such critical deviations immediately. Its evaluation unit continuously analyses the resistance characteristics and compares the measured values of the sensor with those of an integrated reference element. The defect is then reported via HART® communication protocol or on the current loop. The result: demand-driven intervention instead of purely time-based maintenance. In this way, errors can be rectified early before they endanger the process. The integrated True Drift Detection not only makes temperature measurement more efficient, but also significantly safer.
Probes with integrated reference: How can measuring locations be easily upgraded?
To use True Drift Detection, the T38 temperature transmitter must be used in conjunction with a specially configured thermometer from WIKA. The probes are based on the proven measurement principle using a platinum measuring resistor (RTD) in accordance with IEC/EN 60751. An additional reference element is integrated into the probe tip parallel to the RTD – optimally matched for optimal measuring and monitoring results.
The sensors feature a standard-compliant resistance characteristics and deliver the current measured value at all times. The signal from the reference element is used purely for monitoring purposes and does not affect the measured value, ruling out any distortion.
Thanks to identical geometry to conventional probes, existing measuring locations can be easily upgraded without great effort. Thus, the integration of TDD technology into existing plants becomes particularly efficient and cost-saving.
Temperature transmitter T38: Distinct versatility and uncomplicated installation
The T38 temperature transmitter is notable for its versatility and is suitable for a wide variety of requirements in the process industry.
Besides the TDD thermometer, the transmitter supports all common sensor types, which can be connected and measured as single or dual sensors. This provides a wide selection of measuring ranges that can be individually adapted to the respective application.
The result is a customised temperature measuring system that is ready for immediate use and can be easily integrated into existing processes using the plug-and-play principle. Changes to the configuration can be made without any difficulty at any time via the HART® protocol.
T38 with SIL 2 and Ex d field housing: Solution for use in hazardous areas
The T38 temperature transmitter is the first choice for safety-critical applications.
A specially developed, mineral-insulated metal-sheathed cable supports the resilience of the entire thermometer – ideal for the requirements of True Drift Detection. In addition, the transmitter can be combined with the robust Ex d field case (model PIH/PIR) which features high resistance to extreme temperatures, moisture, mechanical loads and salt water.
Another safety feature are the trapezoidal terminals of the head-mounted version. They offer a particularly large clamping area and enable an error-free connection of the probe and the current loop.
