Level measurement

Level measurement by WIKA

The WIKA portfolio comprises various measuring instruments for level measurement. Depending on the application, different measurement principles are used:

What is level measurement?

Level measurement is a quantitative method used in industry to determine the amount of liquids and bulk goods in a container, tank or silo. This method can be used to continuously monitor the level and thus the filling height of liquids in a container. One also speaks of level transmitters or level sensors. It can be ensured that production processes run smoothly and that the safety of processes and plants is guaranteed as well. The main objective is to obtain an exact indication of the current level in a container.

How do reed level transmitters work?

Reed level transmitters are a proven method based on using reed switches. They are magnetic sensors that continuously measure the level of liquids in containers. Reed level transmitters are very robust against vibration and very durable. These level transmitters are especially suited for applications in industries such as, for example, the chemistry, food and beverage industries as well as in machine building. WIKA offers model FLR as a solution for reed level transmitters.

How do magnetostrictive level transmitters work?

With magnetostrictive level transmitters, the position of the float can be determined very precisely. Magnetostrictive level transmitters use the speed of torsional waves along a wire to locate the float and determine its position with high accuracy. Magnetostrictive sensors provide continuous data and are therefore perfectly suited for the exact measurement of levels. For applications in the pharmaceutical industry, the FLM-H is a suitable solution.

How can submersible pressure sensors be used to measure water levels in bodies of water?

Submersible pressure sensors are electrical pressure measuring instruments that are used to measure the water level in bodies of water such as rivers and lakes. The WIKA submersible pressure sensors of the LF-1 series can also be used for level measurement in tanks. Usually the submersible pressure sensor consists of a pressure sensor that measures the pressure of the liquid. Using the hydrostatic principle, the user can then derive the fill level. They present a reliable and effective method for real-time monitoring of water levels in different environments.

What are bypass level indicators, and how do they work?

A bypass level indicator is mounted on the outside of a vessel using at least two communicating connection points. These points allow some fluid from the tank to enter the level indicator’s bypass chamber. Also inside this chamber is a float with a ...

What is the difference between a standard pressure gauge and a safety pattern version?

A safety version (code S3 per EN 837) has an additional solid baffle wall welded between the dial and the measuring system. In addition, the case has a back wall that can blow out completely. The window is typically made of laminated safety glass. ...
